Ruins close to the active port of Tanga attest to its importance as a trading post in the Swahili trading empire. The ruins, once a large mosque, include more than 40 tombs. Tanga has pleasant beaches and is a convenient point from which tovisit the spectacular Usambara Mountains. Just south of Tanga is Pangani, once home to Arab slave traders, set on lovely estuary of the Pangani River. Both Tanga Pangani are popular destinations if you are seeking a historical tour.
The bustling port of Tanga is Tanzania's second port after the urban focus of Dar es Salaam. The architecture of the region has an old provincial design with Arab influences. Different attractions are fish market, beaches and the Amboni cavern, the largest limestone ruins of East Africa. The caverns were formed around 150 million years back, during the Jurassic age. Pangani Village is 52 km south of Tanga, and is situated at the point where the Pangani River immerses itself into the Indian Ocean. The river goes through the north side of the town, isolating the old structures and the present-day showcase from the ranches and little houses on the South side.
Pangani is home of Swahili culture. There are a few Arab and frontier structures still intact in the local area. Stay outside Pangani at Mkoma Bay where there is a fabulous beach on which you can discover fossils and access Maziwe Island Marine Park - arguably the best snorkeling spot in Tanzania!
