A slightly more up market choice than Prison Island, Chapwani, or Grave island which it is also known as is the site of a luxury hotel, but the island also welcomes day visitors who to come eat and drink in the bar and restaurant. Chapwani is the site of a British naval cemetery, the final resting place of sailors who perished while serving in Zanzibar. The victims who lost their lives due to the HMS Pegasus by the German warship Konigsberg during World War One have been buried here.
You may wish to wander around the gravesite of the servicemen. Your tour may reveal that many died out of tropical disease, or were killed in skirmishes with local slavers. It is not that Chapwani would leave you with a heavy heart. You can spend some time enjoying it’s beautiful white sandy beach where a small population of Duikers (a type of miniature antelope) liveandencounter some interesting birdlife.
