The name Mafia derives from Ma-Afir, a tribe from ancient Yemen who dominated the coast around 1000BCE. Mafia Island is the largest of an island archipelago, off the beaten track and known to only the most discerning travelers. This island displays a rich marine life for which it has been designated as the Marine Park by the World Wide Fund for Nature. You would find a small population of pygmy hippo who has been living in the remains of an old lagoon, cut off from the mainland centuries ago. The rich marine life with the stunning beaches, the interesting history, and a number of luxurious hotels and restaurants make it one of the best hotspots in Tanzania.
Mafia Island is Tanzania's first Marine Park. The Mafia Archipelago contains one large island and a few humbler islets. The archipelago is spread over the Indian Ocean. Discovered 120 km south of Dar Es Salaam, is one of the empowering weaving and figuring districts on the planet. It is known for its optimal, pure shorelines with astonishing direct water. Inside and out that truly matters half of Mafia's coastline, around 822km², has been gazetted by the Government as a marine park. Around 50 kinds of corals, more than 460 species of fish and five specific species of turtles have been recorded in the waters around Chole Bay. The straight is ideal for windsurfing and laser cruising. Birdlife is fundamental and totally different from the scenic parks.
Mafia's vegetation ranges from lacking waterfront moorlands and tidal mangrove shrubberies to overpower rainforest and palm-wooden prairie. Amazing baobabs close to the territory Albizia are the obvious portion of Mafia.
