Overview

Welcome to the 6-day Zanzibar Cultural Experience! This enriching journey will immerse you in the vibrant culture, history, and traditions of the captivating island of Zanzibar. Below is an overview of what you can expect during your cultural adventure.

Itinerary

  • Day:1

    Pick up from Zanzibar airport or harbour to Stone town hotel.

    Overnight in Stone Town on Bed and breakfast basis

  • Day:2

    This tour commences with a visit to Zanzibar’s colourful market. While heading for the cathedral built in 1874, you will encounter buzzing locals bartering for fresh vegetables, baskets piled high with tropical fruits creating a sensory overload of sights and sweet smells. The cathedral signifies a poignant time in Zanzibar’s history and is the site of the island’s historic slave market, with its high altar standing on the exact site of the whipping post. By passing a decree the Sultan of Zanzibar had abolished slavery in 1873. From the cathedral visit the residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, ‘Tip Tip House’, the Old Fort, ‘Peoples Place’ and the House of Wonders’, which are full of intrigue and vivid history from a bygone era. The tour ends with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old stone town, the heart of Zanzibar’s checkered history, leaving you with time to browse Zanzibar’s unique souvenir shops. Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, with a selection of local and European cuisines. At 1500hrs catch a boat trip to Prison Island, the former prison for slaves and quarantine station for Zanzibar, this intriguing little island is a worthwhile experience, where you can encounter giant tortoises in the wild. Dinner is at a local restaurant before returning to your Zanzibari hotel for an overnight.

  • Day:3

    After breakfast, depart from the hotel for a spice tour, this involves visiting the species growing areas to see different spices and to learn their nature, uses and taste some of them right on the spot depending on the season. On your spice tour you will visit spice farms where you can see medicinal, cosmetics and ornamental plants with various herbs. Some of the most important items produced include the cloves, nut-meg, rambutan, lipstick, iodine plant, lemon grass, vanilla, henna, shampoo plant etc. You will have the unique opportunity to purchase these exclusive species straight from the source. Finally you will visit the Kidichi Persian Baths that were built by the first Sultan of Zanzibar named Sultan Said bin Sultan in 1850 and Maruhubi Palace Ruins built by the third Sultan of Zanzibar named, Sultan Said Baraghash Bin Said in 1880, which were built especially for housing 99 of his harem. After a relaxing lunch you will be transferred to your beach hotel.

  • Day:4-5

    Spend days at leisure on the beaches of the East Coast or at the resort’s swimming pool. Scuba diving or diving course for beginners are available (at an additional cost) at most of the beach resorts in Zanzibar.

  • Day:6

    After breakfast transfer to the Airport for onwards travel
