7 Days Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is one of the more challenging routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro due to its steep ascent and limited acclimatization time. Here's a typical itinerary for the Umbwe Route, which usually takes around six to seven days.

Detail Itinerary

Pick up from Arusha town or Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Moshi town, which is commonly known as the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. Half board accommodation at a Base Hotel in Moshi.

Drive from Moshi/Arusha to the Umbwe Gate (approx. 1-2 hours), Register at the gate and begin the trek, Hike through lush rainforest, Reach Umbwe Camp (2,900 meters or 9,514 feet) in the afternoon, Overnight at Umbwe Camp.

Habitat : Montane Forest

Depart Umbwe Camp after breakfast, Ascend through the forest, then into moorland, Enjoy views of the Barranco Valley, Arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960 meters or 12,992 feet), Overnight at Barranco Camp.

Hiking time : 4-5 hours

Habitat : Heathland

Depart Barranco Camp after breakfast, Climb the Barranco Wall, a steep scramble, Traverse through alpine desert terrain. Arrive at Karanga Camp (4,035 meters or 13,238 feet), Rest and acclimatize, Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Distance : 5km / 3miles

Hiking time : 4-5 hours

Habitat : Alpine Desert

Depart Karanga Camp after breakfast. Ascend to Barafu Camp (4,600 meters or 15,092 feet), The terrain becomes more barren as you approach the high camp. Rest and prepare for the summit push. Early dinner and rest before the summit attempt, Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Elevation : 13,106ft to 15,331ft

Distance : 4km / 2miles

Hiking time : 3-4 hours

Habitat : Alpine Desert

Wake in the early hours (around midnight) for the summit attempt, Trek to Stella Point (5,685 meters or 18,651 feet) by sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters or 19,341 feet), the highest point in Africa. Descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest. Continue descending to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters or 10,171 feet). Overnight at Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 15,331ft to 19,341ft

Distance: 5km / 3miles

Hiking time: 7-8 hours

Habitat: Arctic

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, Complete park formalities. Collect summit certificates. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha. Celebrate your achievement and rest. Overnight at your hotel.
