Lake Natron lies in northern Tanzania, spilling into southern Kenya at the foot of the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. This shallow, soda-rich lake is famous for its striking red and orange hues, caused by heat-loving microorganisms thriving in its extreme alkalinity.

A Harsh, Yet Spectacular Habitat
- With a pH up to 12, the lake is caustic—capable of burning skin and eyes—due to sodium carbonate and salt accumulation from evaporation.
- Temperatures can soar above 40 °C, and water can reach nearly 60 °C, making survival impossible for most wildlife.
Flamingo Sanctuary
Amazingly, Lake Natron is one of the few places where lesser flamingos breed safely—over 2 million gather here, protected by the lake’s toxicity deterring predators.
The flamingos’ diet of algae gives them their vibrant pink coloring. Their nests form on salt islands created during dry seasons.

Unique Wildlife and Geological Wonders
- Fish like Alcolapia species and microorganisms such as haloarchaea and cyanobacteria tolerate the caustic water.
- Surrounding cliffs, hot springs, waterfalls (e.g., Ngare Sero), and hominid footprints 5,000–120,000 years old offer stunning exploration opportunities.
Top Activities for Visitors
- Ol Doinyo Lengai trek: The only active volcano in the region—night hikes offer incredible sunrise views.
- Flamingo walks & birdwatching: Early morning or sunset strolls reveal massive flocks and diverse birdlife.
- Hominid footprint trails: Hike to ancient footprints—among Africa’s oldest human traces.
- Waterfall adventures: Explore Ngare Sero gorge and take a dip in natural plunge pools.
- Cultural visits: Meet Maasai communities, enjoy their hospitality, and learn traditional crafts and customs.

Why Lake Natron is Unforgettable
- Dramatic landscapes: Brilliant saline flats and volcanic terrain provide a truly otherworldly setting .
- Remote and peaceful: Far from beaten tourist paths, it offers solitude and authenticity.
- Ecological importance: A Ramsar wetland, it’s essential for flamingo conservation—even urgent development threats persist .
