Lake Natron

Nestled in the remote northern region of Tanzania near the Kenyan border, Lake Natron is one of the most otherworldly destinations on Earth. Known for its striking red hues and caustic waters, this alkaline lake offers an experience unlike any other — especially for those seeking adventure, solitude, and surreal natural beauty.

What Makes Lake Natron So Unique?

Lake Natron is a soda lake, rich in minerals like sodium carbonate, which give it a high alkalinity and a pH that can reach nearly 10.5. This harsh environment might seem inhospitable to life, but it’s actually a critical breeding ground for over 2.5 million lesser flamingos, making it one of the most important flamingo habitats on the planet.

The red and pink coloration of the lake comes from haloarchaea—microorganisms that thrive in salty, alkaline waters. These organisms also tint the flamingos’ feathers, creating an unforgettable visual experience.

Getting to Lake Natron

Although it’s not the easiest place to reach, the journey to Lake Natron is well worth the effort. Located near the base of the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, the lake is often included as a stopover on northern Tanzania safaris or walking adventures from the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Travelers are advised to go with a local guide, as the roads can be rough and the terrain isolated. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to October, when the lake is most accessible and the flamingos are nesting.
